Doing Less Can Help You Heal More

The Trap of Doing Everything

When you’re trying to conceive (TTC) or healing after infant loss, it’s easy to fall into the mindset that more is better. More supplements, more treatments, more routines, more research. Many of us are led to believe that if we just try hard enough, if we do all the right things, success will follow.

But what happens when all that effort leads to burnout? When, instead of feeling supported, you feel exhausted—physically, emotionally, and mentally?

This is something Jen, a woman who went through early menopause, failed IVF cycles, and infant loss, experienced firsthand. She shared her journey with us, and one of the most powerful lessons she learned is this:

Sometimes, doing less is exactly what your body and mind need to heal.

The Stress of Constant Doing

When you’re constantly in action mode, your body stays in a state of chronic stress. You might not even realise it at first. The anxiety about what to try next, the fear of getting it wrong, the pressure to follow every “fertility tip” perfectly—it all builds up.

Chronic stress:

  • Keeps your nervous system in fight-or-flight mode

  • Interferes with hormone balance and ovulation

  • Impacts digestion, sleep, and immune function

  • Makes emotional healing after loss more difficult

The more stressed you are, the harder it becomes for your body to function at its best.

How Slowing Down Helped Jen

Jen had tried everything. She was taking all the supplements, following strict diets, going to multiple therapies each week—including acupuncture, massage, and hypnosis. It was overwhelming. After her second IVF cycle was unsuccessful, and the world went into lockdown, she was forced to stop.

With nothing else available, she turned to fertility yoga—not expecting much. But what she found was something she hadn’t realised she needed: calm.

By slowing down, focusing on gentle movement and breath, and letting go of the pressure to do more, she began to sleep again. Her anxiety eased. Her thyroid results improved, even without changing medication. Most importantly, she felt like herself again.

And then, something incredible happened—she conceived naturally for the first time.

Why Doing Less Can Help You More

Doing less doesn’t mean giving up. It means shifting from force to flow. When you stop trying to control every detail, you create space for healing to happen naturally.

Benefits of slowing down include:

  • Activating your body’s rest-and-digest mode (parasympathetic nervous system)

  • Supporting hormone balance and ovulation

  • Improving sleep and reducing anxiety

  • Allowing emotional processing and grief healing

  • Helping you feel more present and less overwhelmed

Simple Ways to Slow Down

You don’t need to change everything at once. Start small, and give yourself permission to rest.

  1. Let Go of the “Shoulds”

    • You don’t have to do everything.

    • If something feels like too much, it’s okay to stop.

  2. Practice Gentle Movement

    • Try restorative yoga, stretching, or walking.

    • Move in a way that feels nourishing, not exhausting.

  3. Focus on Your Breath

    • Deep breathing can quickly calm your nervous system.

    • Inhale slowly for 4 counts, exhale for 6 counts.

  4. Create Space for Stillness

    • Meditate, journal, or simply sit quietly for a few minutes each day.

    • Let your thoughts come and go without judgment.

  5. Rest Without Guilt

    • Take naps, go to bed early, skip activities that drain you.

    • Rest is productive when it supports your healing.

You Are Not Broken

One of the hardest parts of infertility or loss is feeling like your body has failed you. But your body is not broken—it’s overwhelmed. It needs care, not punishment. It needs rest, not constant fixing.

Jen’s story is just one example of how stepping back, breathing, and trusting yourself can lead to surprising and beautiful outcomes. Even after being told she had a 5% chance of success, even after loss, her body found a way—when she gave it the space to.

Final Thoughts: Trust in Slowing Down

If you’re feeling tired from doing it all, know that you don’t have to. Slowing down isn’t quitting. It’s choosing to support your body and mind in a gentler, more sustainable way.

Healing, conceiving, and finding peace can sometimes come from less, not more.

With love & compassion,

Rosie
