How Yoga, Breathwork & Mindfulness Help Fertility, Heal Trauma & Reduce Stress

When we think of yoga and mindfulness, we often picture calm studios, flexible bodies and a vague promise of “feeling better.” But what if these practices were more than that? What if they could actually impact your fertility, hormone health, nervous system, and ability to heal after loss?

That’s exactly what Jen discovered after multiple rounds of IVF, unexpected natural conception, a heartbreaking pregnancy loss, and ultimately healing through yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness. In this interview, Jen shared not only her story but also the science behind these powerful practices.

💥 The Stress-Fertility Connection: What’s Really Going On

Many people know that stress affects fertility - but how it works isn’t always clear.

Jen explains that stress is not just a feeling - it’s a full-body physiological response. When your brain perceives danger (even emotional or imagined danger), your autonomic nervous system kicks into fight-or-flight mode. This response happens whether you’re being chased by a tiger or dreading a negative pregnancy test. Your amygdala - the brain’s fear centre - doesn’t know the difference between physical danger and emotional threat. It just reacts.

Here’s what stress does to your body during fight-or-flight:

  • Digestion slows (not essential for survival)

  • Critical thinking and immunity shut down

  • Reproductive functions pause - the body deprioritises ovulation and hormone balance

  • Cortisol increases, which blocks progesterone production (both use the same precursor hormone)

The result? Irregular cycles, poor ovulation, short luteal phases, PMS, and ultimately, difficulty conceiving.

Worse still, chronic stress doesn’t go away. It builds over time - especially when facing infertility, IVF, or loss.

🧘 Why Yoga Helps (and How It’s Different from Other Exercise)

Yoga isn’t just stretching. It’s movement synchronised with breath that activates the parasympathetic nervous system - your body’s “rest and digest” state. This tells your body it’s safe again, allowing hormones and essential processes to regulate. Yoga increases blood flow to your reproductive organs and brain, supporting hormone production and stress relief.

Key physiological benefits of yoga for fertility and healing:

  • Boosts blood flow to uterus, ovaries, thyroid, and pituitary glands

  • Supports hormonal balance and ovulation

  • Relieves tension in stress-storing areas (hips, pelvis, abdomen)

  • Helps complete the stress cycle and release trauma stored in the body

🧘‍♀️ One Simple Pose:

Legs Up the Wall

Jen’s go-to pose for everyone:

  • Lie on your back with legs up the wall

  • Stay for 10–15 minutes

  • Use cushions under hips for support if needed

It increases circulation to your reproductive area, calms the nervous system, and is incredibly restorative.

🌬️ Breathwork: Your Body’s Shortcut to Safety

We can’t control our heart rate or hormones directly - but we can control our breath. And breath is the fastest way to regulate your nervous system in real time.

When stressed, we breathe fast and shallow. This reinforces the stress response.

When we slow our breath, we signal safety to the brain.

✅ Technique 1:

4-7-8 Breathing

Use when you’re feeling anxious or triggered.

  • Inhale for 4 counts

  • Hold for 7

  • Exhale slowly for 8

  • Repeat for 1–2 minutes

This calms your fight-or-flight response and reduces cortisol.

✅ Technique 2:

Heart Coherence Breathing

Use daily to build vagal tone and nervous system resilience.

  • Inhale for 5 seconds

  • Exhale for 5 seconds

  • No pauses - just a smooth, even rhythm

  • Try for 5 minutes daily

Heart coherence breath helps lower heart rate and improve emotional regulation over time.

🧠 Mindfulness: Healing Through Presence

When grieving or recovering from trauma, we often feel stuck in the past or anxious about the future. Mindfulness gently returns us to the now - the only place healing can happen.

Jen explains that trauma often causes the body to stay in a dorsal shutdown state (freeze), especially in situations where we couldn’t fight or flee - like hearing devastating news at a medical appointment.

Mindfulness helps you recognise that you are safe in this moment, even if your past was traumatic.

✅ Easy Mindfulness Technique:

Body Scan

  • Close your eyes and slowly scan your body from head to toe

  • Notice areas of tension or numbness

  • Gently release or soften those areas if you can

  • No judgment - just observe

This builds awareness and reconnects you with your body - something often lost after loss or trauma.

🌿 Somatic Experiencing: Listening to the Body

“Soma” means body - and somatic practices simply mean anything that brings awareness to the body’s sensations.

“My yoga teacher once told me: ‘Ask your body if she has any messages for you.’ And I heard, ‘You never gave me a chance.’ That was the beginning of deep healing.”

Examples of somatic tools:

  • Yoga and mindful movement

  • Havening (gentle self-touch)

  • Nature walks

  • Breath awareness

  • Feeling textures, temperatures, or sensations

These methods help release stored trauma - without needing to relive memories.

📉 PTSD After Loss: What It Looks Like

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can arise after any experience the body found overwhelming - including IVF, miscarriage, termination for medical reasons, or stillbirth.

Signs you might be dealing with PTSD:

  • Overreaction to small events (e.g. crying uncontrollably after a missed appointment)

  • Avoidance of certain places or people (like hospitals or pregnant friends)

  • Physical symptoms of panic or shutdown (freeze, numbness, dissociation)

  • Feeling emotionally “stuck” or unable to move forward

Yoga, breathwork, and somatic practices can help complete the stress cycle — even when words or talk therapy can’t.

🧭 How to Get Started

If this all sounds overwhelming, start small.

Jen’s advice:

  • Breathe for 5 minutes a day

  • Try legs up the wall pose before bed

  • Download Jen's free fertility yoga guide

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to choose between medical treatment and holistic healing. As Jen says, “Why can’t we do both?”

There is real science behind these practices. They’re not just “woo woo.” They’re ancient tools backed by modern research - and they’re often free, accessible, and waiting for you to try.

Whether you’re navigating infertility, recovering from loss, or just feeling overwhelmed, your body deserves to feel safe again.

And healing starts with one deep breath.
