Understanding “Childless Not by Choice”: Navigating Grief, Identity and Living Loss
Navigating Life as Childless Not by Choice
When someone becomes childless not by choice, it’s not always a simple story of trying and failing to have children. As Sandra explains in our recent interview, the term encompasses a wide range of experiences and circumstances. It’s about wanting to have children but being unable to for reasons beyond your control—whether that’s due to infertility, health issues, relationship challenges, or other life circumstances.
Childless Not by Choice vs. Childfree
One key point Sandra makes is the difference between being “childless not by choice” and being “childfree.” While childfree individuals actively choose not to have children, those who are childless not by choice often face a profound and ongoing grief that continues to evolve throughout their lives.
For some, this grief is layered with feelings of loss not just from failed pregnancies but also from the loss of a life imagined—of friendships at the school gates, family gatherings with children, and future milestones like graduations or grandchildren. This grief is what many refer to as a “living loss”—one that evolves and can be triggered unexpectedly, even years later.
Finding Community and Support
One of the most impactful parts of Sandra’s journey was finding a community of people who truly understood. She discovered World Childless Week and began participating in support groups, eventually creating her own space called Childless Life. As Sandra emphasises, having your grief witnessed by others who “get it” is an essential part of healing.
Misconceptions and Social Challenges
One of the biggest misconceptions is that being childless not by choice means you didn’t try hard enough. In reality, many people who are childless not by choice tried various paths to parenthood—IVF, fertility treatments, or other methods—but found themselves emotionally and physically exhausted.
Another common misconception is that you should be “over it” after a few years. However, as Sandra discusses, grief doesn’t work that way. It’s not linear, and it doesn’t have an expiration date. Triggers can emerge unexpectedly, and being prepared to process them with compassion toward oneself is essential.
Advice for Friends and Family
Sandra offers practical advice for those supporting someone who is childless not by choice:
• Ask Rather Than Assume: Instead of making announcements or asking intrusive questions, consider how the person might feel.
• Acknowledge Their Grief: Even if you can’t fully understand it, recognise that their pain is valid and deserves space.
• Be Available Without Pushing: Let them know you’re there for support without forcing them to talk.
Embracing Life After Loss
Ultimately, Sandra emphasises the importance of allowing oneself to feel both grief and joy. Life after loss can include laughter, new hobbies, and fresh dreams, but that doesn’t mean the grief is forgotten. It becomes part of you, a living part of your journey.
For those navigating similar paths, Sandra’s message is one of hope: You can find a fulfilling and meaningful life, even if it looks different from what you once envisioned.
If you or someone you know is navigating the challenges of being childless not by choice, please know that you’re not alone. There are communities and resources out there ready to support you.
With love and compassion,
Rosie 🌸
