What is Infant Loss? Types, Causes & Emotional Impact

Infant loss is a deeply painful experience that affects countless families worldwide. Whether you're directly affected or supporting someone who is, understanding what infant and pregnancy loss entails can help in navigating this difficult journey. In this post, we’ll explore the different types of infant loss, their potential causes, and the emotional impact they can have on parents and families.

What is Infant Loss?

Infant loss refers to the tragic death of a baby at any stage of pregnancy or shortly after birth. This can include miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death. Each type of loss comes with its own set of challenges and emotional complexities, but they all share the deep grief and sorrow that accompany the loss of a child.

Types of Infant Loss

  • Miscarriage: The loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. This can occur for various reasons, often related to genetic issues.
  • Stillbirth: The loss of a baby after the 20th week of pregnancy. Stillbirth is often unexpected and can be devastating for parents who have already begun to bond with their baby.
  • Neonatal Death: This occurs when a baby is born alive but dies within the first 28 days of life. Neonatal deaths can be due to prematurity, birth defects, or complications during birth.

Causes of Infant Loss

The causes of infant loss can vary widely. In some cases, genetic factors or complications during pregnancy or birth may be to blame. Other times, the cause remains unknown, which can be particularly difficult for grieving parents. Understanding that not all losses can be explained can help in the healing process. I experienced 2 miscarriages and 1 missed miscarriage and I still have no explanation for why these happened, even after doing some testing in England. You can read full my story here.

The Emotional Impact

The emotional toll of infant loss is immense. Parents may experience a wide range of emotions, from shock and disbelief to deep sadness and anger. It's important to acknowledge these feelings and understand that grief is a process that takes time. Support from friends, family, and professionals can make a significant difference in helping parents navigate their grief. I struggled a lot with my mental health, especially after my abortion. I was in such a deep and dark place which felt very scary. Somehow, I found my way out of it, but it was tough. Realising that infant loss can have a huge effect on someone's mental health is crucial. And I wish more people didn't feel so alone or isolated when experiencing infant loss.

Understanding infant and pregnancy loss is the first step in providing or seeking the support needed during such a difficult time. If you or someone you know is experiencing this kind of loss, know that you are not alone, and there are resources and communities available to help you through it.
